Edible Flowers
Edible flowers are of two kinds. Some flowers are eaten as an important part of a dish. Some others are used for adding flavor or color to a dish. Consuming flowers is not a very unusual thing because there are a lot of plants whose leaves and roots are edible. As garnishes, flowers may be used with drinks and with different types of food such as salads, soups, and desserts.
Some popular edible flowers
Some of the popular edible flowers are almond, apple, lemon, orange, peach, and plum, all known for their delicious fruits or kernels. Other popular edible flowers include chrysanthemums, daisies, geraniums, jasmine, and marigolds.
Roses and sunflowers are famous edible flowers. Note that only certain parts of the flowers are edible. That is, in the case of roses, the edible parts are the petals with the white heel removed and the fruit of the rose plant, called rose hip.
Words of caution
It is important to keep in mind the fact that one should not eat flowers that have been treated with pesticides. It is also necessary to keep away from poisonous flowers. You should also be aware of the fact that some flowers need to be prepared to be good for consumption.
Even if some flowers are edible, they are not supposed to be eaten with all meals. Take care and practice restraint while consuming certain flowers even though they are edible. For example, one should not eat Marigolds and Daylilies for every meal.
Not season dependent!
The flowers that you eat in a particular season need not depend on what is available that season. Flower butter may be prepared from flower petals and it can be stored in the frozen state for three months. Similar is the case with flower oils such as sunflower oil.
